Coquette Cottage

Coqette Cottage is in the upper Santa Cruz valley nestled in the foothills of the forested Northern Range about twenty minutes north of the capital Port of Spain and forty minutes west of Piarco International Airport.

We are within easy reach of the beautiful north coast beaches, the City of Port of Spain with its large savannah surrounded by impressive buildings of a bygone age, shopping malls and just 10 minutes away from an 18 hole golf course.

TRINIDAD AN EGO ADVENTURE

Trinidad, the most southerly of the Caribbean Islands has a truly impressive flora and forna due to the geographical proximity to the mainland of South America.

Only seven miles from Venezuela, endows the island with many species of birds of the sothern continent, over 430 have been recorded and in an area of 1,850 square mile makes Trinidad a unique bird watches paradise.

Butterflies abound - 617 speices, 108 spieces of mammals, 55 spieces of reptiles and 25 speices of amphibians add to the naturalists allure to the island.

Tuffted Coquette

The Tufted Coquette (Lophornis ornata) is a rather uncommon but widespread resident in Trinidad, it is also the smallest of the hummingbirds in Trinidad. It is a solitary but very tame species. In flight the rapidly beating wings give off a high pitched, almost metallic buzz,and the bird resembles a large insect as it mives deliberately from plant to plant, hovering motionless for seconds at a time. We are lucky that the Tufted Coquette is a frequent visitor to the garden and can be seen feeding principally on the plant nectar of the lantana camara.
